What is Military School?

Military school is an educational institution that teaches children and teens in a highly structured, systematic environment.

Technically, military schools were designed to prepare children and adults for enrollment in service of the country in the army, navy, marines, air force, or coast guard. However, today many students are enrolled in a military school for the benefits of a structured situation. They may or may not go on to enroll in the armed forces.

Military schools can be a day school, where students go to school during the day but come home at night, or a boarding school, where they live at the school full-time. While military schools can be state-run or run by a public school system, most are private and charge tuition. All offer scholarships and financial aid.

Military boarding schools are different from college-level armed forces training academies.

Georgia Military Schools

Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia

Riverside is a military academy for boys in grades 7-12. Founded in 1907, the school provides a distinctive military structure with a focus on producing young men of character, sound judgment, and commitment.

Missouri Military Schools

Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Missouri is a boarding school for boys in grades 7-12.

Established in 1889, Missouri Military Academy is a a college preparatory military boarding school for boys in grades 7-12. The rigorous daily schedule helps high school and middle school boys mature into young men by providing them with structure and responsibility. Residential boarding school program and day school education is available.

How much does Missouri Military Academy cost? 2022-23 Tuition and Room & Board is $38,000 for a full year, and $19,000 for midterm enrollment. The uniform and accessories fee is $2,954.00 for new students and $595 for returning students.

New Mexico Military Schools

New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico

New Mexico Military Institute is a co-ed four year high school and two-year junior college. They do not accept students over 22 years of age. The program is not a boot camp and cannot handle most special needs.

Known as “The West Point of the West,” NMMI remains the only state-supported co-educational college preparatory high school and junior college in the United States. Leadership training is provided to all cadets at the college level, through the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program, and at the high school level through the Junior ROTC program. The ROTC Program offers college cadets the opportunity to receive a commission in the U.S. Army through the 2-Year Early Commissioning Program. Cadets may pursue commissions in the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines through the Service Academy Preparatory Program.

TMI Episcopal is a co-ed preparatory military school. This Christian school educates students in grades 6-12 and offers a complete college-preparatory program including honors and Advanced Placement courses, as well as a competitive athletic program.

How much is TMI Episcopal? For the 2022-2023 academic year tuition for their 7-day boarding school is $56,510. They also have a 5-day boarding school which is $51,520. Fork Union Military Academy is for boys in grades 6-12. It is a private college preparatory military academy. They use a unique curriculum schedule known as the One Subject Plan, and is a Christian school with affiliation with the Baptist General Association of Virginia.

How is Military School Different from Therapeutic Boarding School?

Military school is a highly structured environment that has characteristics that are modeled after armed forces preparation training.

Therapeutic boarding schools are also highly structured but without the military aspect.

Therapeutic boarding schools are designed to help students who need help managing their behavior. Military boarding schools may or may not be for youth who are struggling with difficult behavior.

Both military and therapeutic boarding schools are situations where students live, go to school and sleep on campus. Almost all military boarding schools and therapeutic boarding schools are private schools that charge families tuition.

How is Military School Different from Residential Treatment for Teens?

Military schools are private schools with a highly structured environment that is modeled after armed forces training.

Residential treatment for children is mental health treatment that is designed for children and teens to receive intensive treatment in order to return to their home and community. Residential treatment is often a more appropriate setting for most children with autism, RAD or Reactive Attachment Disorder, and other mental health diagnosis.
